How to Maximize Study Time

Life today moves at an accelerated rate. Kids have so many options for extra-curricular activities, it seems like the thing that gets neglected most is study time. Part-time jobs, playing sports, belonging to clubs all encroach on that time. Here are a few tips on how you or your children can maximize study time!

  • 1. Make a schedule. Planning is the key to success. Organize your day so that you minimize the amount of travel you have to do. Let’s say your part-time job is close to the gym. Go to your job, then go to the gym without returning home first. You get the general idea. Also talking with family and friends on the phone is a great way to catch up, but it can also really cut into your day. They will surely understand if you need to only speak for a few minutes because of a big test that’s approaching. Try to make these calls from your cell phone while traveling. Finally set aside time in which you are blocking out to study. This is best done twice a day since your brain will retain greater information by studying for two 1 hour sessions than one 2 hour session.

  • 2.Shut out distractions. Many people argue that they “study better” with music on. You know in your heart of hearts if this is the case. Truthfully most of the time it isn’t. Shut off the TV, radio, iPod, cell phone, instant messenger, Internet and any other potential distractions. They can only impede your studying process. Plus it will take you much longer if you are trying to study around all of those distractions!
  • 3.Find a quiet place. Even if you shut every piece of technology out of your life, your home might be hectic. Therefore go to the library, that’s what they are for so you might as well utilize it. If you can’t get to the library, consider going in your back-yard or even taking a bike ride some place quiet. This will enhance your comprehension.
  • 4.Don’t drift. The final piece of maximizing your study time is to focus. All of us have worries, concerns, things we are waiting for, hoping for or are excited by. When you are studying, you must block all of those things out and refuse to let your mind drift. A good test to see if your mind is drifting is to try and recall the page you just read. If you can’t, your mind was wandering! Go back and re-read the page.
